Hermeneutic Phenomenological Understanding on the art therapy of the mother of an only child

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the nature andsignificance of experience of art therapy of the mother of an only child. For this purpose, van Manen's methodology of hermeneutical phenomenology was utilized. The Participants of this study were five mothers of childbearing age who gave birth to one child. The data collection was carried out from October, 2016 to April, 2017, and for each participant, art therapy was performed 12 sessions. 22 sub-themes and 6 essential themes were derived based on the data. Essential themes were as follows: , , , , , and . The conclusions of the art therapy experience were as follows: First, for the participants, art therapy provided time to reflect on and understand themselves, separated from the child. Second, art therapy helped a family composed of three members in a state of treacherous, unstable balance to form and maintain functional three-person system through re-examination of the relationship between the family members. Third, through art therapy, the participants obtained a new perspective that allows them to accept their self limitation. The participants had an opportunity to objectively explore their own life, and had a positive experience to become a mature mother.
